Explore the excitement and experimentation of painting with oils and cold wax medium!  In this fantastic new class, Mark will introduce students to a wonderful creative process and the variety of the tools, tips, surfaces, and techniques used to make gorgeous abstract works of art.

Combine layers of lines, marks, shapes and textures to create fun, expressive and colorful pieces while you loosen up, explore your creativity, and enjoy this fun hands-on experience.  There will be plenty of painting time, instructor demos, and one-on-one instruction. Learn the importance of compositions, and how to bring them to life! 

No experience required - perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike.

Mark Witzling is an accomplished award-winning abstract oil and cold wax painter. His art is in the collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe and private collections in the US, Europe and Asia. His work appears in Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts, Conversations (Crowell & McLaughlin), and Artfolio: A Curated Collection of the World’s Most Exciting Artists.  He has participated in the artist residency program at Chateau Orquevaux (France) and is a two-time recipient of the Diderot Grant. He has judged numerous art fairs and currently serves on the Board of Hope Creates and the Delmar Maker District. Mark has served as Executive Director of Craft Alliance in St. Louis and holds degrees from Macalester College and Boston University.

SUPPLIES REQUIRED

  • Cold Wax Medium (Gamblin or Doland’s) 8 to 16 oz

  • Oil Paints – a selection of transparent and opaque oil paints. 

  • Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits) in small jar with tight lid

  • Messermeister Silicon Bowl scraper (squeegee) or similar (available on Amazon, and art supply stores)   Other thing could be old credit cards etc

  • Other Assorted mark-making tools: whisk broom, wood skewers, old toothbrush, Art Graf  graphite, R&F Oil Sticks, stencils, pencils, Mirabu markers, newsprint, wax paper, tissue paper,​powdered pigment, powdered charcoal, and any other items you may want to​ use. These are all optional – Bring what you have. Instructor will have an ​assortment available. 

  • We will be working primarily on Arches Oil Paper. Arches is available in pads or ​sheets from Amazon and major art suppliers. 12x16 pads work well. Wood panels are optional and must be gessoed. 

  • Paper towels, freezer paper, gloves, and palette knives will be available, but feel free to bring your own if preferred.

  • Instructor will have a limited supply of cold wax, other painting mediums, odorless mineral spirits, and assorted mark-making tools to share.
